Pastéis de Belém, World Famous Desserts in Lisbon & History 0

The Pastéis de Belém are registered trademark, one of the 7 wonders of the Portuguese cousine and, possibly, the most known Portuguse deserts.

Its history starts in the 18th century. Originally made by nuns of the “Mosteiro dos Jerónimos” who in an attempt to gather some money started selling then in a store outside the convent. Later, the recipe was sold to a baker who started producing then since around 1838 in the same place where the factory “Pastéis de Belém” is until today.

Made with egg yolk, milk cream and sugar and put inside a cup of fine pastry. It’s common to sprinkle them with iced sugar and/or cinnamon and they go very well along with your coffee, while at it you can use the little spoon to slowly eat the sweet cream.

You can find a very similar version called “Pastéis de nata” in Portugal or outside – though very similar in taste and form, the genuine recipe of “Pastéis de Belém” is a well-kept secret property of the factory with the same name.

We give you a Bonus, where is the link to the Pasteis de Belém recipe from Jamie Oliver!
