The Padrão dos Descobrimentos is a Portuguese monument built from 1940 to 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Infante Don Henrique death. Made entirely from concrete its shape resembles a ship and portrays the figures of the 33 most influential characters in the Portuguese Maritime Odyssey.

After reaching the top floor, using the elevator, you will enjoy both the Tagus river shore and “Rosa dos Ventos”, a  Splendours marble mosaic, a gift from South Africa and another Monument to the Portuguese Maritime Odyssey.

The Padrão dos Descobrimentos lays facing the Tejo river in the most beautiful landscape in Belém very near Torre de Belém, CCB – Centro Cultural de Belém, Jerónimos Monastery and the Pasteis de Belém factory. The “Rosa dos Ventos” is a gift from the Republic of South Africa, with 50 meter diameter and depicting a 14 meter hemisphere with the main routes of the Portuguese maritime expansion.
