The Padrão dos Descobrimentos is a Portuguese monument built around 1960 in order to commemorate the 500 anniversary of Infante Don Henrique. Made entirely from concrete its shape resembles a ship and contains the figures of the 33 most influential characters in the Portuguese Maritime Odyssey.
After reaching the top floor, using the elevator, you will enjoy both the Tagus river shore and “Rosa dos Ventos”, a Splendours marble mosaic, a gift from South Africa and another Monument to the Portuguese Maritime Odyssey.
The Padrão dos Descobrimentos lays facing the Tejo river in the most beautiful landscape in Belém very near Torre de Belém, CCB – Centro Cultural de Belém, Jerónimos Monastery and the Pasteis de Belém factory. There is plenty to do and see in Belém, schedule one entire day to visit three of the most important Portuguese Monuments.
